About Us

"Integrating Voices of Refugees and Immigrants: Faculty and Curriculum Development" is an interdisciplinary oral history project developed through Mercer University courses, designed to document and preserve the lived experiences of refugees and immigrants in Middle Georgia. Through a dedicated oral history repository, the project collects personal narratives and perspectives from staff members in nonprofit organizations serving migrant communities, as well as from local residents who have experienced migration themselves. Using a community-based learning approach, students actively conduct and transcribe interviews, contributing not only to the creation of a valuable historical archive but also fostering empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and a deeper awareness of the challenges faced by migrant populations. By integrating these authentic voices into curriculum development and faculty engagement, the project strengthens the connection between the university and the community while promoting socially responsive education.
